چکیده
Context. Red supergiants are observed to undergo vigorous mass loss. However, date, no theoretical model has succeeded in explaining the origins of these objects’ winds. This strongly limits our understanding red supergiant evolution and Type II-P II-L supernova progenitor properties. Aims. We examine role that atmospheric turbulence may play initiating determining mass-loss rates stars. Methods. analytically numerically solve equations conservation momentum, which we later couple an temperature structure, obtain theoretically motivated rates. then compare state-of-the-art empirical rate scaling formulae as well observationally inferred supergiants. Results. find pressure due characteristic turbulent velocities for is sufficient explain objects absence normally employed opacity from circumstellar dust. Motivated by this initial success, provide a first fully analytic prescription conclude highlighting some intriguing possible implications future studies stellar evolution, especially light lack direct dependence on metallicity.

A Clumping Independent Diagnostic of Stellar Mass-loss Rates: Rapid Clump Destruction in Adiabatic Colliding Winds
Clumping in hot star winds can significantly affect estimates of mass-loss rates, the inferred evolution of the star and the environmental impact of the wind. A hydrodynamical simulation of a colliding winds binary (CWB) with clumpy winds reveals that the clumps are rapidly destroyed after passing through the confining shocks of the wind-wind collision region (WCR) for reasonable parameters of ...
متن کاملAtmospheric dynamics and the mass loss process in red supergiant stars
Context. Red supergiant stars represent a key phase in the evolution of massive stars. Recent radiative hydrodynamic simulations suggest that their atmospheres may be the location of large-scale convective motions. Aims. As supergiant convection is expected to generate supersonic motions and shocks, we seek constraints on these atmospheric motions and their possible relation with mass-loss rate...
متن کاملDust-driven winds and mass loss of C-rich AGB stars with subsolar metallicities
Aims. We investigate the mass loss of highly evolved, lowand intermediate mass stars and stellar samples with subsolar metallicity. We give a qualitative as well as quantitative description which can be applied to LMC/SMC-type stellar populations. Methods. For that purpose we apply the same approach as we did for solar metallicity stars and calculate hydrodynamical wind models including dust fo...
متن کاملDust formation in winds of long-period variables IV. Atmospheric dynamics and mass loss
We have calculated radiation-hydrodynamical models of the atmosphere and circumstellar dust shell ofC-rich longperiod variables which include a detailed description of the dust formation process. We discuss the time-dependent behaviour of the circumstellar envelope (e.g. multiperiodicity) and its relevance for observational properties like near-IR light curves and investigate the time-averagedm...
متن کاملMass-loss rates and luminosity functions of dust-enshrouded AGB stars and red supergiants in the LMC
A radiative transfer code is used to model the spectral energy distributions of 57 mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for which ISO spectroscopic and photometric data are available. As a result we derive mass-loss rates and bolometric luminosities. A gap in the luminosity distribution around Mbol = −7.5 mag separates AG...
